Transformation inevitable, after years of community development hard work
The lush green agriculture fields of Kadribank village and all its children in school surely tells the world that this village is trailing on with fast developing India. Was Kadribank like this twelve years ago? The answer is No.
World Vision India through Giridih Area Development Programme, Jharkhand entered this Village in 1996, a time where poverty was reaching an abysmal depth and acute scarcity of food and other resources was the order of the day.
Twelve years ago, Kadribank was among the backward villages in the area. There was no proper communication, the literacy rate was as low as 20 percent and only 5 acres of land was irrigated of the 650 acres of land belonged to the community.
Many awareness drives and school attendance of children are helping the community to understand the consequences of marrying their children early. 'If we did not go to school, we would have been married by now', said fifteen-year-old Gudiya Kumari, who understood that World Vision played a role to protect children from marrying early.
World Vision working closely with the community and the government decided to change the numbers on the chart – by putting consistent efforts in changing people’s minds and introducing development models that proved to have worked not only for Kadribank but also for villages in Jharkhand.
Kadribank is 32 kilometers away from Giridih town. It is here that World Vision’s dream for every child can be seen. Twelve years was a lot of hard work, but World Vision is seeing the need to finish the race, 'We are currently working on capacity building, training on various food crops, cash crops, food sufficiency and irrigation facilities', saidSatyaprakash Pramanik, Programme Manager.
The key points of positive change:
· All (100%) children go to school
· Irrigation facilities have improved
· Purchase power increased
· Child Marriages dropped considerably
· Community enjoys Food Sufficiency
· Individuals opened savings bank account
· Migration checked
· Secure and reliable coping mechanism free from bondage
· Good leadership in the community
Call it power to the people or otherwise, today wholesalers rush to Kadribank for business deals, “Now traders with trucks comes to our village to buy our crops and we have enough to eat at home. We will invest our money on children’s education and arrange their marriage only after the completion of their studies”, said a leader of a Self Help Group.
Transformation is inevitable after long years of hard work, and Kadribank is a living proof of this.
