A role model on Education for the youth of his village

A firm resolve not to be a daily wage labourer changed the life of Rajesh Parmar now a Primary School teacher at Borkheda Village in Dahod.

Barely 15 year old, Rajesh was forced to drop out of school (IX grade) and get married and forced to migrate to work as a labourer to dig a cable pipeline in a neighboring city. Unable to bear with the life as a daily wage labourer, Rajesh resolved to continue his education.

Rajesh came back to his village, finished his schooling and Primary Teachers’ Training Course and got a job as a primary school teacher in a Government run school three kilometres away from his village. Rajesh dint stop there. He wanted to do something for the children in his village where the school drop out rate was high.

With the support of the sarpanch (village leader) and the community he filed an application for getting a primary school. Their unstinting effort resulted in a school for grade 1 in their hamlet for 40-45 students with one teacher. In subsequent years the school had 5 grades with 3 teachers, 4 rooms, compound wall and with good education.

Rajesh on the other hand is also the chairman of the Village Development Committee and because of his concern for education he has taken the help of World Vision in getting a hand pump for the school, carpets for the school, poultry to sponsored children, notebooks, sports competition and cultural programs for children in the school.

The village has currently 3 youths who have got job as a primary teacher with one being Rajesh. For them the priority is to focus on zero drop out rate and each child in 10th and 12th grade should do higher education so that no child in the village may be left out without skills for life.

There will be a time in the future when this village may be a role model for others to follow in the field of education.
